I think just being environmentally concious in your daily life is the best way to help. Simple things like making sure fish that you eat is sustainably caught, and making sure you recycle things as much as possible, rather than just throwing them away. One of the biggest causes of pollution in the ocean is little bits of plastic, which all collect together in the middle of the ocean due to the ocean currents. All this plastic, as well as being really ugly, can cause big problems for all sorts of marine life. Trying to clean this mess up — and making sure it doesn’t build up again — is really important.
Be mindful of what you throw away as more of it than you think ends up in the sea. Recycle what you can.
Also, make sure that, if you eat fish, you’re buying it from a sustainable fishery. Look out for the Marine Stewardship Council label on whatever fish you buy. It’s like Fairtrade for fish and means that the fish you’re buying isn’t endangered and has been caught using environmentally friendly methods Find out more here: http://www.msc.org
You could also, if you’re feeling comitted, stop eating fish unless you have to. Nothing would be better for the worlds oceans than a worldwide reduction in demand for fish!
Yes I agree with Dave and Sean don’t waste recycle turn the lights off don’t let the water running unnecessarily, take the bus, unfortunately all these things we do as individuals are a drop in the ocen (!!) when you think that they wrap cucumber in plastic, I mean how much plastic could we avoid using by not wrapping cucumber!
I think the others have it covered. Try to only buy fish that has been caught in an eco-friendly way (i.e. without accidently catching and throwing away a lot of other fish). Try not to use too much packaging or thrwo away too much rubbish (re-cycle instead), and definitely don’t litter. Also try to cut the amount of energy you use and the size of your carbon footprint, as greenhouse gas emissions are causing acidification and warming problems in marine ecosystems.
Get INVOLVED in your community! Yes, it’s definitely important to do what the others are suggesting – you definitely don’t want to add to the giant ocean garbage patches or eat fish that are endangered – but – by getting involved, now, as a teenager, you’ll be able to positively influence others to make a change, too! How awesome is that!
