Well, I’ve been caught out in storms in the middle of the ocean before. I felt a little scared then but I don’t think I’ve ever felt in too much danger whilst working before!
I don’t think I’ve ever really been at serious risk, but there have been times when it’s been quite hard to convince myself that I was actually quite safe!
I work with dangrous chemicals every day so I suppose I am at risk all the time. Some of these are really carcinogenic (causing cancer) and teratogenic (disturbing the development of the unborn i.e. you have kids with 3 heads if you get in contact with these) too. But if you know what you are doing and wear appropriate gear (labcoat, gloves goggles etc) you are fine 🙂
Working with heavy machinery on a moving ship is quite dangerous, as is working with nasty chemicals in the lab. I felt scared when I went to the bottom of the sea in a submarine. However, we think about all of these risks in advance and take precautions (wear gloves, wear hard hats, tie equipment down, don’t fall overboard, keep the submarine in good working order, obvious, sensible things like that) to prevent them actually being dangerous.
Yes – but like the others wrote – it’s SUPER important to take precautions and wear the right safety gear. Even then though, sometimes, a shark just clamps down on your leg or you slip and slice your leg open and it gets a nasty infection.
