No – because the animals that get stuck die very quickly. I do actively pick up rubbish whenever I’m out collecting or diving. Sometimes, after a big storm, animals like sea stars (and even some jellyfish) get washed up. I pick them up and throw them back into the water into the low tide zones. There’s a story about that – a young man is walking along a beach and sees a man throwing sea stars back into the water. The young man says, “What difference are you making? You can’t save every one of them!” To which the old man replies, “You’re right – but to that one I just threw back, I made a difference.” I don’t know that my picking scrambling along and pulling up monofilament lines makes a bit of difference in the GRAND scheme of things – but for that one seabird or fish that doesn’t get caught in it – it did. 🙂
