      Hi Rachel,

To be able to get a job like mine i.e. Post-Doctoral Research Associate (Post-doc) you need to have a degree and a PhD. You can then apply for post-doc positions. Generally speaking there are quite a lot of post-doc positions around especially if you don’t mind working away from your home town. The only drawback is that you generally work on 3 year projects and then you need to apply for another job, so there is no much job security. Obviously the more specialised you get the more difficult it gets to find a project that will fit your skills. The trick is to learn as many techniques as possible during your PhD and post-doc so you can work on a range of projects.

An alternative is to work as a Research assitant in which case you don’t need a PhD but just a degree. This could be a good way to get an idea about lab life. These are also short term projects and you can do a PhD afterwards and sometimes during.

      Hope this answers your question:)
