Depends on the day. Today it was really hard. Tomorrow, hopefully, will be not quite so difficult. Having said that – at least it’s never boring! I’d much rather a job with hard days than boring days.
There are days when you try to solve a problem (say in the lab) and feel like you are getting nowhere, or you try to interpret your data and it makes no sense, but these are the challenges that make the job interesting. An easy job quickly becomes boring. The most common difficulty is just having too many things that you want to do!
It really depends! Sometimes I can have a day where everything just works and feels really easily, but sometimes things can seem really difficult and be a bit frustrating. It usually works out in the end, though!
I think there’s a common myth that being a scientist is really really hard, and you have to be super intelligent to do it, but I don’t think that this is true, you just have to be committed to what you do.
To quote Einstein (I seem to be doing this a lot this evening!) ‘I have no special talents, I am only passionately curious’.
