Going to the bottom of the sea in a submarine. I was an ‘aquanaut’ for the day! When you get into the submarine everyone wishes you luck and takes your photo, and when you come back at the end of the days they all shake your hand and congratulate you and ask you what it was like. It’s like being a celebrity for a day. Seeing the deep seafloor with my own eyes just took my breath away. I’ve worked on it for years, but didn’t ever expect to actually see it for myself.

This past year, I had the chance to visit South Korea. I was out for a walk in Pusan and it started pouring down rain. Unfortunately, I didn’t have an umbrella. This tiny little old man (couldn’t have been more than 5 foot!) saw me and came over and held his umbrella over my head. He didn’t speak a word of English, but walked with me to the taxi stand, and waited until one arrived. I thought, what a great day! But then it got better – the taxi took me up this really winding road through this cloud bank until, all of a sudden, this absolutely stunning Buddhist temple arose out of the mist. It was so beautiful it was surreal. And the day just kept getting better! How does this relate to my job? Well – my job is what got me to Korea – so I have to say – thanks job, for one of the best experiences of my life so far!

Probably being on a research ship, near the coast of Greenland (which is ice-covered, mountainous and really beautiful) and being surrounded by big icebergs. Most of that cruise was really bad weather, but with one day was really calm and sunny – which made it some much better. Usually all of the scientists were working on different shifts, so it was easy to go for days without seeing certain people – but one this one morning everyone was up on deck taking in the views.

Sleeping under the stars on tropical desert islands is probably the best experience I’ve had, with little but the sounds of the waves to lull you to sleep. It gets a little bit chilly at night when you do that mind, but the sun comes up by 7 and by 8 you’re running for the water to cool off instead!

I’ve spent 2 weeks in an observatory during the summer holiday at my first year at university in Turkey. That was amazing! We virtualy never slept. We had lectures during the day and we were doing observations at night. I learnt a lot of things about constellations, other planets in the solar system how to use a sky atlas…. I was absolutely breathless the first time I’ve seen Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s 4 moons throught the telescope. The observations were finisihing at dawn when we could finaly go to sleep but it was so much more fun to sit on the hill and watch the sun rise over the city!!!!
