Truly, having the chance to change the way people (especially young people) look at the world around them. There is nothing that gets me as jazzed up as watching someone’s eyes light up when they learn some cool new thing about the ocean that didn’t know before. My research is great, too, because people really find octopus interesting. So – more opportunities to talk! 🙂

The best thing is that if I am curious about something I can actually go the lab design an experiment and get an answer to my question, and they even pay me to do this 🙂

I think just getting to spend every day trying to understand a little better how the world works, and then getting the chance to talk to other people about it – like we’re all doing here! Also the opportunities to travel, and go to weird & wonderful places 🙂

I like being my own boss, and deciding for myself what projects to work on, and how to structure each day/week/month. OK, I do have a boss, but I don’t get told what to do anywhere near as much as in many other jobs.

I also love the variety, as the job involves field work, amazing travel, office work, lab work and teaching. Most people have to choose just one of those things.

Of course, the travel, and the opportunity to study amazing environments is really cool too!
