Glow-in-the-dark everything. I was doing a night dive, but without a torch. I just sat there, on the sandy seafloor, as darkness fell. As my eyes adjusted – I thought I was looking at a Christmas tree – sparkling lights everywhere. I would move my hand and the water would glow bright blue from the movement. I looked over at my dive buddy, and he had removed his fins and was just using them as wings – creating these big swirls and whorls of glowing water. Absolutely, breathtakingly stunning.

Haha, yeah, glow-in-the-dark (or bioluminescent) creatures at night are a lot of fun! For me, the most fascinating creatures that I’ve ever encountered underwater was probably the first turtle I ever swam with. It was very obliging and continued along with me and my dive buddy for about a minute before getting bored and swimming off. For that minute though, it was incredible to see this creature swim up to us, stop, swim around us for a little bit and then seemingly decide that we had no chance of catching it or doing it any harm (completely right to be honest, those things are very fast underwater) and just let us swim alongside it for a little while. Fascinating and breathtaking at the same time…

I think manta rays are the highlight for me! Unfortunately I was snorkelling rather than diving, but seeing three of four of the massive rays ‘flying’ underneath me was really amazing!
